Context
Like any major city, Cape Town requires situational awareness. Crime exists, but millions of residents and visitors live and work here safely every day. The key is understanding where, when, and how to exercise caution.
Areas
Tourist and central residential areas — the City Bowl, Atlantic Seaboard, and Bo-Kaap — are generally safe during the day with normal urban precautions. Some peripheral townships and certain CBD streets have higher crime rates, particularly at night. Consult your accommodation host for area-specific advice.
Transport Safety
- Ride-hailing (Uber, Bolt) is the safest way to get around at night
- MyCiti buses are generally safe and well-maintained
- Metrorail has had security concerns; exercise caution, especially off-peak
- Minibus taxis are affordable but have safety and driving-standard concerns
- Avoid walking alone in unlit areas at night
Home Security
Most apartments and houses in Cape Town have security features: burglar bars, security gates, and alarm systems. Many neighbourhoods have active neighbourhood watch programmes and private security patrols (ADT, Fidelity). If your accommodation has a security gate, use it.
