Festivals
Tweede Nuwe Jaar, the Malay Choir Carnival, and the neighbourhood’s biggest celebrations.
The Bo-Kaap’s festivals are among Cape Town’s most vibrant cultural celebrations, rooted in centuries of Cape Malay tradition. The most famous is Tweede Nuwe Jaar (Second New Year), when thousands of minstrel troupes parade through the city in a tradition dating back to the days of enslavement. These festivals are living expressions of cultural identity, not tourist spectacles.
Key Highlights
Tweede Nuwe Jaar (2 January)
The Cape Minstrel Carnival, or Kaapse Klopse, sees tens of thousands of minstrels in colourful uniforms parade through the streets of Cape Town — a tradition with roots in the one day enslaved people were given off each year.
Malay Choir Carnival
Cape Malay choirs perform in the weeks around New Year, with competitions and performances that showcase the community’s unique choral tradition.
Ramadan & Eid al-Fitr
The month of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid are central to the Bo-Kaap’s cultural calendar — a time of fasting, community, and celebration.
Mawlid an-Nabi
The celebration of the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday is marked by the community with prayers and gatherings.
Cape Town International Jazz Festival
While not Bo-Kaap-specific, this major festival takes place at the nearby CTICC and draws international artists each year.
